Frustration Continues As Roadworks' Finish Date Is Postponed

Monday June 17 2013

New predicted finish date for A61 New predicted finish date for A61

THE expected finish date of the long-running roadworks on the A61 has been put back once again.

As we reported here, Barnsley Council said the scheme would be finished in June but a spokesperson from the council later said: "It's anticipated that the works will be completed in August. The slight delay has been caused by the need to divert a water main."

Cllr Roy Miller, Cabinet spokesperson for Development, Environment and Culture, said: "The essential element of the A61 works at Burton Road is the widening of Old Mill Lane to facilitate the installation of a new bus lane and traffic signal controlled junction.

"The road widening works involve the reconstruction of the south-east footway which is full of services. To avoid services being cut off they have to be diverted before the roadworks can progress.

"Since works recommenced on site last November, negotiations have been taking place with three cable suppliers and electric and water suppliers to arrange their diversions.

"These diversions are now due to be completed shortly and the road widening works will quickly follow. It is planned that works on site will be completed by the end of September 2013."

If they got someone to work on it, that would help...usual public sector cockup.

what a surprize i carnt wait to see when its done ,then see how long it is before they start to dig it back up again because they always seem to do this ,we get a bit of good road for about a month or 2,then they start digging roads back up ,,they should just digg a tunnel striaght down middlke ov the road and put everything in one tunnel under ground ,then they could work all day and night if needed and nobody would be any wiser and no more traffic problems but no just keep wasting loads of money,,sorry for going on but it does our heads in all this traffic,it runs better when all the traffic lights are not working also i think ,i dont no if anybody thinks this,as it takes ages to get in to town at morning rush hour and at tea time that is a joke

Ever heard the one about how many men does it take to change a light bulb! Seriously put some effort into it and get it finished!

How many titles, does Roy have, He worked at BP so what makes him an expert on all these things?

Regarding the A61 I hope someone has been sacked for this farce. Anyone noticed the lovely new bigger carpark at Wickes? Paid for by the public purse due to BMBC cockup in not knowing what they own.

Now banging on about services needing moving - they always needed moving you get this stuff nailed when you do the planning process, you know planning? I'm guessing there is a people department doing that for highways at BMBC - it doesn't matter though when badgered for long enough due to lack of communication BMBC will just wheel roy out to make another excuse, the next one will be, we need to dig the road up followed by we need to put some tarmac down.

M62 was planned and completed quicker than this project.

What would really help this project in the Short term is if Workmen were actually on site doing some work. I travel on this road several times a day and you rarely see anyone actually doing any work. Come on Barnsley Council, get your finger out and make these people do some work !!!!!!!!

If I messed up on this scale with my job I would be sacked! Am not usually a moaner and quite patient but the old bit of road outside wickes old entrance is so bad it's wrecking my new car. Only seem to see one at a time working on it too. Sort yourselves out BMBC. #Shabby

This is an utter disgrace. BMBC are simply a laughing stock.

Could Roy Miller please come forward and advise which councillors signed off approval for the start of the works all those many moons ago before they had agreed a fee to purchase the land which caused the initial delay - can he also investigate why there is a delay this time as surely they knew about the water main and that it would have to be moved - I bet he knows a hell of a lot being about whats going on... isn't he also the councillor in charge of highways???
Whichever councillor signed these off should resign as they have wasted thousand of pounds of public money!!
No wonder the street by the Town Hall is called 'Shambles' street........

Come on Roy take on the challenge and say who's fault it has all been.

Is it me, or is there something DEEPLY SINISTER about all these delays?

I agree like most with all the other comments, but I would like Mr Miller to come out & tell us how much more it will have cost than the original contract estimate,I am willing to bet they would have finished it months ago if the contractors had any late finish penalties in the contract. We can wait for an answer!

Its ajoke same as rest of roads into and around barnsley. It takes ages to get into town and unless you must get there for work or whatever theres nothing in town centre except pubs tanning salons n charity shops its much better to jumpon m1 n head to wakefield leeds or sheffield. Barnsleys gone to shit and has been heading that way for years now. About time bmbc got a clue or brought someone in who actually knows how things work before barnsley ends up like goldthorpe and wombwell high streets, once bustling now just ghost towns

b.m.b.c. are NOT fit for office but unfortunately Houghton and his jobsworths will continue to get elected to office in Barnsley even up until the cock up on the A61 is finished (that could be decades),Barnsleys roads are a total disgrace they are an insult to the council tax /road tax payers of Barnsley ,they DO NOT give a shit about us ,i can bet the Councillors expenses payments to them are not delayed into their accounts.
