Bizarre Contract Offer Could Signal Goalkeeper's Exit

Tuesday June 11 2013

Luke Steele Luke Steele

BARNSLEY goalkeeper Luke Steele wasn't offered a longer contract due to his age. He's only 28, which for a goalkeeper is still young, so do you think the Reds have made a poor decision?

Manager David Flitcroft has revealed he's on the verge of bringing in a young goalkeeper from Europe. He also said that he 'completely trusts' Ben Alnwick to step up to number one, should Steele depart.

The fan-favourite is expected to leave after being offered reduced terms on a one-year deal.

Flitcroft believes it's too risky to offer Steele a longer deal due to his age, although defender Tom Kennedy, who turns 28 later this month, recently penned a two-year contract.

Flitcroft said: "If Luke was 22 then we'd offer him a two-year or three-year deal, but age is a critical thing and we don't know what our budget will be after this season so we have to plan carefully."

What do you think to this? Have your say below.

This is ridiculous .. Goalkeepers play well into their thirties and even forties and most get better with age .. Like a fine wine .. Think this a bad move for the reds ..

My thoughts entirely, Ann. At 28, he's got at least a decade left in him!

Improvements in the team when Steele returned show that we need him.
He is a Key Player for the team, McNultly gets a deal Steele gets shafted? explain that again?? I for one would be extremely displeased if we let one of the divisions top keepers go for some hidden agenda. I hate people moaning on here all the time but this is absolutley ridiculous. He deserves to be treated with more respect and as a football club we should tie him down as he approaches his prime.

Shilton, southall and van der sar. While im not saying luke steele is as good, hes a solid performer and young for a keeper. This contract and his next one should be 3 years as hes in prime earning age. Disappointing

If Barnsley let Steele go, then pack your bags 4 league 1 & change Luke Steele in favour Ross Turnbull a free agent from Chelsea

IT was almost understandable with Fozzy. Hassell won't be expected to play as much as before so I understand the lower contract. However, Steele is a key man and a loyal servant of the club. he has improved and will continue to. This age thing seems ridiculous. Tie him down he is a good keeper and a key man, and now the captain. Is flicker just trying to get rid of players who have played for the club (Not Rochdale) and just keep his own regardless of whether that makes footballing sense? Keeping Steele should be a priority.

Flitcroft, this is a serious mistake on your part.

Too old at 28, utter rubbish, a goalkeeper is probably just getting to his best at that age. More like Barnsley have had an offer for him and the directors need some holiday money.!!! Barnsley have always sold a star player at the end of the season. No change at Oakwell it would seem..
