A WOMAN has been jailed for six months for 'stupidly and thoughtlessly' stealing someone's purse during a sneak-in burglary.

Barnsley Magistrates' Court heard that Leanne Waite was struggling with a combination of personal problems when she committed the crime.

Eric Bray, defending Waite, said that her mother had died a few days earlier.

Her victim was having a nap as she burgled the home.

Mr Bray said Waite was 'beset with problems' just before she burgled the victim who was having a nap.

He said: "It seems she was not coping with the loss of her mother and with her drug and alcohol abuse.

"She had gone to speak to the victim and knocked on the door. There was no response, so she opened the door, saw the purse, took it and left."

Jayne Ormrod, prosecuting, said the victim had left the purse on a worktop in the kitchen and went to sleep after getting home from work.

The victim was awoken by the door shutting as Waite left. Mrs Ormrod said the crime came to light when Waite was later seen by police knelt by the side of the road apparently trying to stuff something down a grate in a gutter.

Waite, 35, of Woodhall Road, Darfield, who admitted burglary, told police after her arrest that she drank two bottles of vodka a day and regularly used crack cocaine, according to Mrs Ormrod.

How do you thoughtlessly burgle a house?

(unfortunately) in this day n age it is a bit careless to leave your door unlocked. But whether your door is open or not, that doesn't give anyone the right to enter, or to steal from you. Thats like saying ppl who wear short skirts are 'asking' for it :/ MY door was locked and chained (for the night) but it didn't stop the scum bag from kicking it down, nick my car keys (not in sight) and drive off in my car!! The article doesn't say what punishment she got?!

Locks only keep honest folk out, sadly it looks like we have to keep our doors locked to keep the thoughtless ones out as well. Thoughtless indeed!

Garbage!

Ohh I have problems in my personal life, I am an alchoholic, I am a smackrat...

Excuses,excuses, excuses!

ALL thieves deserve prison time, irrespective of the idiotic excuses they come out with.

What a load of crap, how does someone finance 2 bottles of Vodka a day and a crack cocaine habit, obviously not with a job and heaven forbid if she gets sufficient benefits to do it so she has been stealing for quite a while never mind blaming the loss of her Mum.

These people come out with more shit.
I dont know who makes the most stupid comments the one that is pissed up and cranked out and shes so beside herself.
That 2days later she goes and robs some poor old bird. and the defence finds a reason for this.
Its not thoughtless.
Where the hell do you get 140.00 a week for 2bottles of vodka a day and cocaine.
I think shes definately thinking and probabley goes visiting a lot of people who are asleep
