Town centre set to be boosted by investment Town centre set to be boosted by investment

THERE has been good news for Barnsley town centre - a further £3million is to be spent on improvements.

As work on the new park at the side of Barnsley Town Hall is due to be completed next month, an announcement is due shortly of a £3million grant to improve key town centre streets.

It is expected that European regional development fund money will confirmed by the government within the next few weeks.

That will mean the money will be spent improving Eastgate, Regent Street North and South, Mandela Gardens, Eldon Street and Market Hill.

The car parking area on Market Hill will be redesigned and enhanced, pavements will be updated and environmental improvements carried out.

"It is very good news for our ongoing plans to improve the town centre," said Cllr Steve Houghton.

"We are determined to ensure we make it as attractive and pleasant as possible for all visitors and potential investors.

"Anything we can so do to make Barnsley look and feel better has to be good for the town and its people and hopefully will encourage as many businesses as possible to invest here."

"Let's go to Barnsley shopping"
"No I prefer Meadowhall, it's free parking and indoors"
"but they've got improved pavements & an enhanced car park in Barnsley now"
"Well you should have said that earlier. What are we waiting for?"

Lol. You don't get much for £3 million do you?

This is all well and good but do you think in this 3 million there would be enough left for tonnes of bleach and a power washer for inbetween Aqua Inn and Grogger? The smell is horiffic. Great impression when visitors get off the bus to go to the market and have to walk past what might as well be a urinal.

£3million spent on upgrading and improving those streets will make massive difference to the look and feel of the town. The new town square is looking great and is a huge improvement to the centre. This is great news following on from that and good on the council for realising the value of trying to make your town look more attractive, which has all sorts of indirect benefits for jobs, investment, retail spend and sheer civic pride.

All well and good making the centre look nice but the farse and the state of the roads leading into it is enough to put anyone off

I'm very pleased to see that (my birth-place) Barnsley has got 3 million pounds to upgrade a few deprived areas of the town's centre. I hope for the sake of the unemployed in the town the upgrade will attract new businesses to set up there and offer them jobs.

Good luck for your future Barnsley.

Forgive my pessimism, but 3 million won't go far with the current set in charge, half of the money will probably go missing in beauracracy, endless meetings, halfbaked proposals, consultations and plans. The other half will go on overpriced low quality work that will be doled out to people that have good contacts with councils this will run over deadline and over budget. Lets see what 3 million can get you these days

Yup, as usual spot on guesty.

You forgot to mention the "consultation" fees for the erm consultants, that's should swallow up at least a third of the 3 Mill.

I went to Wakefield last week and had not been in years, I came back home actually appreciating our town.
Everyone within probably three miles of their door step have to see drugged up alcoholics parading on our streets, not just barnsley.

£3 million? what about the £150 million we was meant to be getting to redevelop all of the town centre?

I think they should spend the money on more climbable art

I am guessing that the money was robbed from some other fund. For example all the money that was withdrawn from areas like Goldthorpe and Bolton on Dearne. Or other villages around Barnsley. Instead it will be wasted on the centre just like millions have before. What a cock up as usual.

I was hoping to see that Shambles Street would be given some consideration but it would seem not again.
