THE police have arrested a man after he allegedly climbed the 33-ft sculpture outside Barnsley Town Hall.

They confirmed that a 33-year-old man from Barnsley was arrested at around 7.20pm on Sunday, May 26, on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly, after reports he was climbing on the new structure.

He has since been charged with being drunk and disorderly, as well as being in possession of a Class A drug, and is due to appear at Barnsley Magistrates' Court on June 10.

why would you put a stupid lump of metal thats nothing but a waste of money in the middle of a town centre pub crawl run with tha ability to climb in an not expect people to climb in! i think he improved the eyesore, the 10 grand to deliver an insure ot would be better spend on sorting out
the roads

The sculpture is stupid and what do you expect from drunk people? They obviously are going to climb it!

What do they expect - putting a sculpture with "steps" in the middle of the pubs area of Barnsley. Wait till a few have fallen off and claimed thousands in compensation from the council. Looks like it is going to have to be surrounded barbed wire or that the bottom 10 feet coated with burglar deterrent paint that never sets to keep the morons off.

Well they waste all that money on that thing we have to get out moneys worth from it if nothing else

What a tool - and you know what makes it worse WAB advertising the fact that he's done it - bit like a badge of honour. Simple matter of the fact is that a guy has climbed a sculpture - well done.

Reply Posted by JON on Thursday May 30 2013 at 12:54
I'm glad they have advertised it, I will also be glad if they report a nice hefty fine for the idiot who was arrested. The fine should incorporate the cost of the police resources he wasted and the cost of the court administration.

Reply Posted by JON on Thursday May 30 2013 at 12:52
The Simple facts are:
1. The bloke is an idiot and an addict - obviously needs help.
2. The police are going to be out more often than they think after people keep climbing it.
3. Barnsley Council didn't pay to buy the statue, they rent it for a rumoured £5000 a year.
4. The police should be billing the council for wasted resources having to spend time and paperwork arresting someone when it was blatantly obvious that this was going to happen.
I bet the same idiot who approved the statue also signed off the roadworks at Old Mill Lane that have overrun by 18 months - the council is a joke and should be investigated.

how do you know he's a chuffing addict? christ almighty do your homework before stating the 'facts'

Reply Posted by mini on Thursday May 30 2013 at 13:32
Thats exactly why its a waste of money! You get nutters like this giving Barnsley a bad reputation!

Reply Posted by Matt on Thursday May 30 2013 at 13:49
So some idiot climbs a statue and suddenly its a waste of money and stupid anyway?

Lets not invest in anything nice in Barnsley because drunken, drugged up idiots are always going to spoil it for everyone else anyway. What a sad and depressing attitude to have about your town.

Reply Posted by john on Sunday June 2 2013 at 19:37
most folk though it was a waste of money before he climbed up it, all that seems to b happening is the road getting narrower/blocked off

barnsley is skint, we applaud thatchers death yet put up with something as wastefull as this the nation laughs at us.............. barnsley council you should be ashamed

Reply Posted by gary on Thursday May 30 2013 at 15:23
your all saying he's a drugged up idiot ,,not true , he did it to prove a point , that this would happen every weekend ,,,Normal barnsley people don't want things like this 30 foot joke same as most of us didn't want the joke of a bus station (BALAMORY )BUT who asks us ,,no one

Reply Posted by Hoyland Red on Thursday May 30 2013 at 18:08
Errr, you have a chance to make your point during the planning process, and you really think he was a making point that every drugged up drunk idiot would be doing the same each weekend - he's a real Emily Pankhurst.

Right. One thing, £5000 is nothing - more will be spent on council loo roll. £5000 to an individual household is not the same as £5000 to a council.

People need to see what Barnsley is trying to achieve from things like the Sculpture as well as further developments it is currently planning/building. They are trying to re-invent the town, shake off the coal dust and make it a more cultural and creative place to be - shock horror, this means spending some money. This in turn will make Barnsley a more appealing place - attracting businesses to the area with money and jobs.

Unfortunately, anything new always divides opinion. But if people stopped putting Barnsley in the press for all the wrong reasons, the fella featured above, Thatchers funeral etc. the Council wouldn't have such an uphill struggle.

Oh and anyone complaining about an "eye sore" or "rust bucket" that shouldn't be there because it will attract scum to climb it. I suggest you take a trip to the Yorkshire Sculpture Park - basically a field and some "eye sores" - also know as a successful organization, provided many jobs and attracting thousands of people from all over the country to visit this area every year.

I agree with what you're saying but the choice of sculpture could have been better, not that I dislike it, but its far to easy to climb and it won't be long until the press reads man dies after climbing sculpture. I think they should have thought it through it a little more.

yeah would tend to agree with you there KW but yorkshire sculpture park is not full of junkies and drunks is it not like Barnsley town centre, it does not matter how much money you throw at it you can not change the people in it.

It may not be the best looking thing in the world but i bet someone has spents hours of hard work on making it and how would you like you work be called rubbish and everyone have a say on what happen in barnsley find out in papers or notices or go in to b.m.b.c and ask for more info and barnsley has many good parts we are lucky that we have so much green around us

£5000 - Money that could have been spent on local youth clubs, or care for the elderly, or libraries. There are lots of different ways that this money that could have been invested. I understand that we want to draw people to Barnsley to invest and to spend money but do people really think that this statue is going to do that? Its simply an accident waiting to happen someone will climb it and fall off one day.

Not too sure on the 'rent' although one thing i do know is that it cost the council £30,000 to build the reinforced plinth to stand it on and an additional £4,000 to transport it.

This info was sent to all council staff in a corporate communication email

It just wants trimming up with some barb wire thats all. That should keep all't nuggets off it.!!!

KW... the bill doesn't end at £5000 does it? Lets' look at this in a little more detail shall we. Roughly £5000 to transport this 'sculpture' from Wakefield, £5000 per annum to insure it, £30000 for the reinforced plinth it sits on, £250000 for the redevelopment of the area where the 'sculpture' is located, the additional knock on effect of the roadworks and disruption the work caused, then we have the H&S risks and the time that will be wasted by Police and emergency services dealing with the cretins who will, and already have, climbed up it. So we can probably round it off at a cool £500000 in total, plus additional on-going costs. Now, it's all well and good wanting to attract people to Barnsley however, what use is that if there's no decent roads for them to drive in on because there's potholes everywhere, no public conveniences for them to use while they are here, no Libraries to take their children to and many other public services suffering and failing due to the council having no money and making cut-backs. But that's all okay, because we have a big stupid rusty 'sculpture they can look at while they wait for the recovery man to come and get them because their front wheel has been ripped off by a pot hole! Priorities you moron!!
