Tributes Flood In For Friends Killed In Crash

Wednesday May 29 2013

Josh Powell Josh Powell

TRIBUTES have flooded in for two friends who were killed in a car accident.

Josh Powell, 18, and Daniel Hancock, 25, both of Grimethorpe, were thrown from the Peugeot 306 convertible.

Josh, a soldier in the Army's Light Dragoons died at the scene, while Daniel died in Barnsley Hospital on Wednesday morning.

Army pals described Josh, of Park Avenue, as a 'true family man', 'one of a kind' and 'a promising young soldier'.

Daniel, of Elizabeth Street, known as Danny, was described by a neighbour as a 'popular lad' from a well-known family.

Police said the vehicle left Engine Lane on a slight left-hand bend, hitting a lamp post before continuing along the footpath, through a garden and into the front of a house.

That bend is hardly sharp, obviously they were speeding on there but it doesn't mean their death isn't tragic.....thank god there was no one in the house injured too. My thoughts are with the families, may Danny and Josh rest in peace, such a tragedy to take 2 young lives.

something else the council should look at the road surface is not very good on that bend , it is all breaking up

Please learn a lesson from this,
Limits are not there to annoy ,
If you keep to the limit chances are,
you won't crash or if you do you'll
LIVE. ...

If they had survived and knocked over a little old lady on that footpath, you'd all be calling them scum and saying hang 'em. Foolish lads who paid with their lives and destroyed their families through their stupidity and selfishness

Well Said Barnsley Truth, of course the families are suffering, they have lost a loved one, but it doe'nt alter the fact that they were driving at an exessive speed, not just speeding............. EXESSIVE !!,

We've all done stupid things in our lives and got away with it,
When is your time up !

I agree with spike. to a degree. I have walked past the scene. I walk up there regularly. yes the road surface is shocking and in some need of repair.nikita. you need to get real. its not good burying the head. yes these families have lost good people from their lives. but the message is very loud and very clear. yes..it does matter what speed they were doing. because we should.!!! all learn from this. engine lane has been death road for a very very long time. over the years a lot of people have been killed on there.hazel. how is fred commenting in a derogatory way. mrs mallinson, I hope some read your comments to learn from as people do need to realise the dangers of excessive speeding. Barnsley truth. spot on too. yes, what if a group of schoolkids been ploughed into. or as you say, someone else. there will be a lot of digging during, and after, and at the inquest. I suspect a verdict of accidental death will be raised. let it be a harsh lesson to all the users of engine lane. for me, engine lane should be one speed. not 3 different speeds.

barnsley truth, the thing is they didn't survive and they didn't knock a little old lady over. that's the difference, Josh and Danny were great lads, no matter what anyone says about them. So what if they were speeding, they didn't hurt anyone else in the process except themselves. look after each other up there Josh & Danny, thinking of you everyday xxxx

Its not "so what they didn't kill anyone". That's just chance. These lads risked their lives and others, and thankfully paid with only their own. My partner is a collision investigator and sees the consequences of silly people's actions every day, usually its an innocent child or passing car with a family inside that ends up destroyed. A real soldier would never take such risks. I'm glad they only took themselves.

I cant believe this is still happening people saying oh they were speeding or what if they killed someone! Well they didn't they died at such a young age leaving their families broken and a village shocked! RIP Josh and Danny!

Reply Posted by luby on Friday May 31 2013 at 13:38
has it been verified they were speeding though. a lot of roads not just barnsley but around west/south yorkshire are of poor repair due to sever wether conditions are not restricted properly on speed or could do with better traffic control.. Yes thank good no one else was injured in the accident but also condolencies to the familes of these two fellas.

Own doing. The family's left behind are the ones in pain now they dnt want to read all this at this time. Put yourselfs in the pic. If it was one of your kids. Cos no ones are innocent god bless them n their family's and I myself dnt agree to drink drug or speed. Driving but we can't help what our kids do no matter how many times we drill it into them

when are people ever going to get the message,if you dont have anything nice to say then dont say anything, there are two families grieving the loss of loved ones and shouldnt have to read such comments.none of ys know if we could be facing tragedy with our own kids some day

It sickens me to see how people can be so judgemental about 2 innocent life's, no matter what the consequences no one deserves to die! If the shoe was on the other foot and it was one of your family members or a friend you wouldn't be so quick to judge. No one else was involve so there's no reason to speculate the only people that deserve answers are the ones who are truly affected by the loss of Danny and josh not those who interfere. Our community has loss two precious life's who will be sadly missed by all, if all you have are foul comments then keep them to yourselves, you should be ashamed!

Well said Stacey. Condolences to the families and friends. Speaking ill of the dead is disrespectful (or so my grandma used to say) but maybe those old values have been thrown to the wolves since the advent of public forums where people can give their 'personal' opinions without any regard to the effect their comments are having.

If you drink and drive people get hurt if you drink and drive at high speed people die RIP lads thank god you didn't take innocents with you.

It was 3 in the morning, they were hardly going to hit a 'little old lady' or 'school kids' it has not been confirmed what speed they were doing but as stated earlier, how many people honestly stick to the speed limits? And you've all seen the 'hit me at 30 adverts' but how many of you r god dam hypocrites and still do 40!!! That is still speeding and putting lives at risk so stop been so dam heartless. Speeding or not 2 young men still died
Have some respect

I didn't know the lads, but my son and his friends did and the message about speed etc has really sunk in... But will it make a difference, we have all taken risks and done silly things when we were young men, unfortunately, sometimes circumstances catch us out.. as it did with these two young lads .. let's not play the blame game .. they didn't intend to loose control .. they just got it wrong .. and yes thankfully noone else was involved .. but they have paid the ultimate price .. so let the families and all the young people that knew them say farewell .. without anybody pointing any fingers .. we all make mistakes .. and we sometimes pay dearly for them..........
RIP lads from your mates Alex, John and Jack and me that didn't know you.

Josh and Danny were two of the most kind hearted thoughtful people you could have ever met. The things i have just seen on here are disgusting and you should be ashamed. We know what speed they were doing and it wasnt excessive actually and even if it would have been it still wouldnt matter to us. You people just think how you would feel if it was your son, grandson, brother etc !! Have some respect. It was an honour to have those boys play a big part in my life, Love you always angels xxxx
