A FORMER mechanic who suffered severe brain injuries and a fractured neck in a motorbike race day has won the right to multi-million pound damages.

Peter Corbett, 54, from Pogmoor, needs lifelong 24-hour care after his motorbike left the track at a circuit in Cumbria and hit an ambulance, which the judge at the High Court hearing was parked too close to the corner.

Mr Corbett was unconscious for three months after the 2006 crash and his wife, Anita, gave up work to help him with daily tasks like washing and dressing.

Anita said: "We have been through an awful lot over the past six years and our lives have changed beyond recognition."

Kate Petchey, a brain injury specialist at Irwin Mitchell, which represented the Corbetts, added: "Peter and his wife have shown tremendous courage."
