College Student Offered Cambridge Place

Cambridge bound: Callum Burrows Cambridge bound: Callum Burrows

A BARNSLEY student has received a conditional offer from Cambridge University.

Callum Burrows, 17, is studying physics, mathematics and further mathematics for his A-levels at Barnsley College - and has received the offer from renowned university for mathematics placement.

Callum, who lives in Lundwood, was invited to attend a five-day residential STEP (Sixth Term Examination Paper) programme at Peterhouse - the oldest of the Cambridge Colleges - where potential students experienced intense lectures, preparation for entrance exams and practice.

The STEP Mathematics is a three-hour examination designed to test candidates on questions that are similar in style to undergraduate mathematics.

“I am really pleased," Callum said. "It has always been my ambition to go to Cambridge, although my GCSE grades were not outstanding, with hard work and support from the college I have been able to increase my grades and am now on track to achieve the requirements.”

If successful, Callum will start in October and hopes to later progress to a PhD to research number theory.

Why has this made the news?

Because it's a positive story about someone who's achieved a great thing. Do you disagree?

This is a great achievement but lots of good things happen to people every day but they don't make the local news. Like when I have birth in 2 minutes that didn't make the news haha.

Well done to him though.

I cannot believe some people question why this has made the news and then poke fun at it. This young man clearly has the intelligence to earn his place at Cambridge. It's the ignorant and the less intelligent who can't be pleased for him and the achievement of our local college. Well done Callum.

Absolutely! there are quite a few students every year that get offered places to Cambridge and Oxford, the majority reject the places though due to the crazy fees involved and the crazy financial criteria you must meet to take your place.

If you look at what the lad says, you will see humility and an acknowledgement of what hard work can achieve. That's worth some pride even before he gets to Cambridge. Well done. I do wish that those that keep putting Barnsley down would give it a rest. I've spent the last 40 years being educated and working outside Barnsley and regularly see how collagues from our town stand out in a positive way. Our people skills are some of the best you will see. Anyway well done Callum.
