Council Re-Advertise Job After Unsuccessful Process

A SENIOR marketing manager to improve Barnsley's image and drive forward its economic strategy has not been found - prompting the authority to re-advertise the job.

The £70,000-a-year post was advertised on Barnsley Council's website, and its closing date for applications was in January.

But despite a number of people being considered, no appointment has been made.

Cllr Steve Houghton said the job will be re-advertised this year as the post is key to driving forward the town's economic strategy.

"The first round of appointments were not what we had anticipated and we will try again," he added.

A council spokesman confirmed no appointment had yet been made.

He said: "The vacancy will be re-advertised and, until an appointment is made, the council will examine the possibility of providing an interim solution."

It would be the successful candidate's responsibility to improve the image and perception of Barnsley at local, national and international levels, and 'positively contribute' towards inward investment, business growth and increasing visitor numbers.

They would also be responsible for working with the borough's businesses to deliver Barnsley's economic strategy.

Why, instead of spending money, can we not have a "small board" of people within the community to liaise with BMBC. I feel I am well qualified to discuss about promoting Barnsley and I am that proud, I am sure I can give a little of my hard earned time to the cause... but £70,000 for that job! Surely, we can all pull together and put some corking ideas forward without a massive expense...

I couldn't agree more Robert. £70,000 is rather excessive! There are certainly enough people in Barnsley to pull together and brainstorm ideas to promote the town. No need for such silly expense. I'd happily give a little of my spare time to the cause. Times like this we need to be saving money not spending it stupidly!!

Paying over the odds again, 55,000 is the MEDIAN on this type of job role and I mean senior marketing managers for Multinational coroporations with Multi million pounds of budget, Where as BMBC is a two bit council with no budget who will also be paying a large pension pot.

First thing most private sector companies do in times of austerity is cut their marketing staff, our council ups the salary, Steve houghton - you are clueless.

I worked for Barnsley Council and money for senior management roles was never an issue, paying ludicrous salaries and letting everyone know they do this, justifies each one of them earning more than any post below theirs! This is the culture. They don't have a clue.

Houghton and his cronies in their newly refurbished ivory tower are so out of touch it is beyond belief.
The only time Houghton and his highly paid counterparts ever leave said ivory tower is for media and P.R spin for their own self promotion.
Miller is one of the worst.
Burgess makes a gaffe every time she opens her big gob.

But don't worry about Houghton, he'll be alright as he earns MORE than the prime minister, these is OBSCENE as far as I am concerned.

Bet you its someone they know who gets the job too.

People of Barnsley, it is time for a change they have done nothing for our town, now is the time to stand up and be counted and kick them to the gutter where they belong.

Lets see some strong opposition to these lazy, greedy, fat cats, someone who is genuinely interested in our community, and the financial problems we are all experiencing, not someone who needs extra money on top of their "millions" for a jumped up invented job, and a complimentary electric car to boot!!!
