We Are Barnsley We Are Barnsley

A DARFIELD magistrate has retired from the bench to spend more time improving education and healthcare in the town.

Trevor Smith will remain a justice of the peace but is now on the supplementary list - meaning he will not exercise his duties on a full-time basis.

The former Barnsley Independent Group councillor said he found it near impossible to juggle the role with his position on the governing bodies of Barnsley Hospital, Netherwood School and Valley Primary.

"I want to see education in Darfield come up to scratch and also to improve healthcare in Barnsley but I found it nearly impossible to concentrate on what I was doing so have had to cut my workload," he said.

"Education in particular has always been close to my heart - I've been a governor for Darfield schools for a long time."
