A SHOPLIFTER was brutally frank at the time of his arrest, Barnsley Magistrates' Court was told.

Paul Simon Musgrave, 42, confessed: "I am an alcoholic."

Musgrave, of Newton Street, Barnsley, became dependent on drink to compensate for his yearning for drugs, according to his solicitor Philip Howard.

Mr Howard said Musgrave had not touched a drop since his arrest. He had also been effectively living on the street but was now staying at his mother's home and with a friend.

Philip Morris, prosecuting, said Musgrave took bottles of wine from branches of Costcutter and Quality Save within five days.

"Mr Musgrave said to police that he took the wine because he was an alcoholic," said Mr Morris.

Musgrave admitted two shop thefts and breaching a 12 month conditional discharge.

He was fined a total of £146, ordered to pay £85 in costs and a £20 victim surcharge.
