POLICE in Barnsley have been running a month-long operation to tackle cannabis cultivation across the borough.

Operation Barracuda has been set up to target individuals who are cultivating cannabis and educate the public to be on the look out for signs that this may be happening in their area.

Since January 1, the police in Barnsley have already dismantled 28 cannabis set-ups across the borough but there is still more that can be done to stop this issue.

“During the month of May, we will be targeting individuals who think it is acceptable to grow cannabis, whether this is a few plants for personal use, or 600 plants in a warehouse," said DCI Mark Wilkie.

"The cultivation of cannabis brings unwanted criminality into the area, not only by people breaking into houses that they believe cannabis is being grown to steal the plants or cash, but also with people coming and going from the properties to buy the cannabis.

"There is also an increased risk of fire in properties growing cannabis, as they usually tamper with electricity and use high intensity lights. This is not only dangerous to them, but to people living in the surrounding areas.”

Police are also asking the public to be vigilant and look out for signs of people growing cannabis around them, such as a strong smell or an increase of people coming to and from the property.

Anybody with information should contact the police on 101 or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. Any information received will be dealt with in the strictest of confidence.

Just been reading the comments posted. It is a sad reflection on a crappy society when you all think the Police are lazy or should be doing something else. Drugs are not harmless and they are not fun and cause misery the world over. Yes alcohol and cigs are bad enough but drugs are worse.
I think most of you posters should re read what you put and be ashamed and grow up.

Local people and police know the areas where growing this is common place and should always have a regular police patrol in these areas . Like the post says criminality and cannabis cultivation going hand in hand,So the police would be tackling both problems together.

Its things like ketamine and Mkat smack, crack etc that causes the problems... Cannabis has no none affects that have harmed anyone the list of the good this drug can do is pretty big... Yet u all seem to think that going to the pub and having a pint is acceptable coz the gov made it legal... Now this drugs does and has caused many probs is the highest leading factor of all A&E submissions... Tax payers money have to pay for alki's to sit on dole all day, they have to pay towards NHS treatment when their liver has failed or someone has been badly injured through being to p**sed.. Yet ppl still comment on this post that cannabis is so bad.... I think a few ppl need to be taught a few lessons..... PS my house was one that was searched NOTHING was found just pathetic neighbours causing trouble through jealous.
