BARNSLEY spoiled a potential Premier League party and boosted their survival hopes with a crucial 2-0 win against Hull City.

The one-sided victory had lifted the Reds out of the relegation zone for a few hours - but Peterborough's 1-0 win against Sheffield Wednesday put Barnsley back into the bottom three going into the final weekend.

A 15,744 crowd crammed into Oakwell for the final home game of the season, and the fans were duly rewarded early on with a 4th-minute Jacob Mellis goal.

Five minutes after the interval, the Tykes doubled their lead through Chris O'Grady and the score remained the same until the final whistle.

"It's massive," said Barnsley boss David Flitcroft.

"It’s been a special day because we had to cope with a build-up that was all about Hull’s promotion celebrations.

"I’m absolutely delighted with my players because they showed not just resilience and determination but a lot of quality, too."

The Reds now go into the final game of the season knowing a win would ensure survival.
