Youth Unemployment Rises

Thursday April 18 2013

Michael Dugher MP Michael Dugher MP

MP MICHAEL Dugher has called for urgent action to tackle long-term youth unemployment as figures have shown yet another increase in Barnsley.

The Barnsley East MP has called for the urgent introduction of a “Real Jobs Guarantee” to tackle the growing problem of long-term unemployment in Barnsley.

The latest unemployment figures, released on April 17, show that the number of 18 to 24-year-olds in Barnsley who have been unemployed for more than twelve months has risen yet again. It now stands at 530 - up from just 155 two years ago.

Michael has welcomed the slight fall in the total number of people claiming Jobs Seeker’s Allowance (JSA) in Barnsley, which now stands at 7,860. However, overall the figure has increased by 12.8 per cent over the last two years.

"Overall, unemployment is much higher than two years ago and long-term youth unemployment in Barnsley has risen yet again, demonstrating how the government’s failing to make a difference," said the MP.

“In Barnsley, the number of 18 to 24-year-olds who have been unemployed for more than twelve months has increased by a massive 241 per cent in the last two years."

The scheme, which would require young people to take up the offered position or face possible benefit sanctions, would help 530 18-24 year olds in Barnsley alone, according to Mr Dugher.

Its about time this government or the next one started to repay the wrongs Thatcher and her creed did to Barnsley . Total destruction of Barnsley's industrial base' Then replace with what ? Absolutely nothing .Thats what !

Thatcher fault ??? What about the 13 years since then. The labour council in Barnsley have done nothing, (other than build a museum and a multi million pound water feature !). People need to wake up and stop blaming politicians, 95% all them are all crooks regardless of party. As a nation we need to change attitude, eduction and effort is what's required.

Can you remember the mess this country was in before Thatcher was prime minister mick?

Look closer to home, scargill didn't do Barnsley any favours whatsoever. Sadly the people of Barnsley were brainwashed by this idiot!

Can't just blame the Tory's. Labour had 13 years in which they could have helped Barnsley and just didn't bother.!!!

Perhaps he ought to tackle the education failings first to give young people a better chance of gaining employment!!

Why is everybody always rattling on about unemployment .
Have you not learned anything about life other than what government we can blame........
Once upon a time there was a bus.
It had a driver and a conductor. then they offered the driver more money to do both jobs.....then there was no conductor.......
Once upon a time there was a car industry
and they said we want more money or we dont work...they spent that much time out of work they built robots to build the cars.
Then there was no car workers......they sold everything to people who would do the job for less.........
If you look back in history through 60s 70s
there wasnt amonth went by without someone in industry wasnt on strike.ie
steelworkers..ford and other car companys...coalminers. etc etc and for all people who thiks im talking crap look outside now and look at the car your driving volvo.ford.bmw.datsun toyota jaguar ........
Look in the corner of your room at the tv
toshiba.samsung.jvc.....even the clothes your waring...india........no i dont think your buying cheap goods because we have good industry....we had it....and blew it

Les you're absolutely correct.
"I want more for doing the same or even less" has killed this country.
While men went on strike, technology simply overtook us, I've never seen a robot with an attitude problem, or go on strike !!! Hungrier nations and individuals have prospered whilst the less hungry have fallen by the wayside.

"Real jobs guarantee"

Where are the "real" jobs in Barnsley?
There are none Dugher you Buffoon, there's plenty of casual agency work if you fancy a day here and a day there.
Another classic example of Labour MP's with no real clue what happens in our town.
