Escaped Murderer Gets Additional Sentence

Thursday April 18 2013

Barnsley Magistrates' Court Barnsley Magistrates' Court

AN ESCAPED murderer re-captured in New Lodge has appeared at Barnsley Magistrates' Court.

Craig Hendley, 42, was arrested after seen running from a home on the estate, the court was told.

Chantel Lowery Green, prosecuting, said Hendley was serving a life sentence following a murder in 1992.

She said that in 1995 he was involved in an assault on Ian Black, another high-profile inmate, in Wakefield Prison.

Mrs Lowery Green said Hendley had been in a lower security jail near Redcar since October.

"He was allowed to work at the Salvation Army in Redcar," she said. "He did not turn up and an item appeared on TV news saying he was on the run."

Hendley remained handcuffed in the dock because there would be a fear he would be violent if the cuffs were removed.

Hendley was jailed for 16 weeks to run concurrently with his present sentence.

Handcuffed in the docks for fear of him bring violent? Seems like a great idea to have him, firstly, in a low security jail and, secondly, allowed out of jail to work!! And 16 weeks in addition to a life sentence hardly seems enough to cover the wasted police time, costs & hearing - and not much of a deterrent not to try again!!

..... and he is allowed unattended amongst the Public, I wonder if they even fitted him with a tracker.

What if he would have murdered.someone else, the prison should work more closely with prisoners and lock them up 23 hours a day, no out of jail work because it's putting the.public at risk. What was he doing in newlodge, has he family their,.. Thank god the scum has being caught.

Lovely man? Some of the comments on here are ridiculous. P in particular.

Why was he let out in the first place? This "lovely man" is a convicted murderer. Prison is supposed to keep him away from civilised society, to punish him and protect us. What's the point of sending someone to prison if it's nothing more than free accomodation to use between trips out? P you are a complete moron. As for you Samantha, I'll happily shut my gob when your beloved uncle's cell door is shut firmly behind him.
