Ikea Set For Sheffield - A WAB Debate

Thursday April 11 2013

We Are Barnsley We Are Barnsley

LEADING furniture and homeware retailer Ikea is set to open a new store in Sheffield, which is to create around 700 jobs.

What more could have been done to lure the investment to Barnsley? Would you have liked to seen it come to here instead?

The council's already said that it's important that we release some green belt land for developments to boost Barnsley's economy, so is this a missed opportunity?

Ikea said the £60m development would create about 200 jobs during construction and 400 jobs in-store, with another 75 to 100 jobs in associated positions such as maintenance and a creche.

What do you think, WABers? Have your say below.

No, if they start tucking into green belt land now pretty soon they will have scooped the lot. If people have actually noticed we have some pretty decent countryside here in Barnsley and it would be a real shame to lose it. There's already plenty of development opportunities in derelict areas around the Barnsley area. Maybe Barnsley council should take action to generate opportunities in the town centre first.

Totally agree. There is plenty of available derelict land without tucking into greenbelt. Our green areas are one of the best features of Barnsley.

Hang on! Why don't you try sorting the town centre out first bmbc. The council are always harping on about "out of town shopping" and how bad it would be for the town, but they now want to release some green belt land for developments to boost Barnsley's economy.

You have past your sell-by date bmbc. Time for a change!

I think you may have misread the story Sparky. My understanding is that it's not Barnsley Council that are saying IKEA should come to Barnsley using Greenbelt Land it's the We Are Barnsley Website and btw it's not cut and dried that IKEA will go to Meadowhall as they have been refused planning permission before. BMBC are hoping to attract businesses (not retail) to areas that are predominantly in Green belt land adjacent to the highway network. One of their main aims is to regenerate the town centre but without a major funding partner this isn't going to happen - unless of course you're advocating increasing the Council Tax to pay for it.

Why don't we add a pound to everyone's council tax to help pay for the renewal of the town centre?
I will tell you why - because nobody cares about it any more and would rather go to Meadowhall or similar.
Besides do we need an Ikea store here? You can order online for goodness sake.
Let us get rid of Barnsley councillors who are useless first and then use up all the brown field sites and leave the countryside alone. After all thanks to the southerners we will be losing some of it to the train!
Barnsley cannot have it all ways. They block the extra stores at Cortonwood but then leave the town centre in a crappy order. Make your mind up BMBC.

Arrrrrrgh Cortonwood is Rotherham - why would BMBC support that!!!! This story has not been raised by BMBC - Its WAB that is asking the question.

BMBC have had plenty of time to get investment in to the town. The Council have failed on a number of projects. Council Leader Steve Houghton said in 2003 that "it was important for Barnsley to move forward". What happend to the Halo, Remaking Barnsley and there was even talk of the arcade having a chinese theme, lol. Instead of things getting better, they have got worse. BMBC charging ridiculous town centre rates haven't helped either.

Buck your ideas up BMBC!
