A TOWN centre school has been given a glowing report by Ofsted inspectors, who praised it for the outstanding teaching given to its pupils.

St Mary's Church of England Primary has been judged as 'outstanding' in all areas including the achievement of pupils, quality of teaching, behaviour of pupils as well as leadership and management.

St Mary's converted to an academy school in February last year and also provides support to All Saints' Darfield, which also belongs to the Academy Trust, and Pipers Grove Primary, which converts to an academy in June.

The inspector's report says St Mary's teaching enables pupils to make outstanding progress in reading, writing and mathematics, and pupils use these skills exceptionally well in other subjects, such as history.

"Pupils are exceptionally keen to learn," inspectors said. "Their behaviour in lessons is excellent."

However, the report also highlighted that in order to improve further, the school must extend the speaking skills of all pupils, particularly boys, by ensuring they talk about their learning during different activities and participate fully in class discussions.

Headteacher Lee Spencer said the school is 'really pleased' with the report.

"It's down to the hard work of all the children, staff and community and it is very much a team effort in working towards a common goal," he said.

Congratulations to St Mary's. My son left there 8 years ago and went onto some great GCSE results and then onto a great career in engineering with an international power company. It is no doubt that the excellent education from St Mary's formed the firm foundation of his success. It's also great to see Mr Spencer there as Head. Well done!!

Well done St Mary's, both my boys went to school there and the support and education they received was excellent so I am not surprised they received and Outstanding grade for OfSTED. I am also pleased to see Mr Spencer is still there, he was always my kids' favourite teacher
