A SPECIAL general meeting will be held this week to discuss the reopening of Athersley Social Working Men's Club.

The Mansfield Road-based club closed suddenly amid financial difficulties in February.

The meeting is to be held at the club on Tuesday at 7.30pm, and is being held with a view to it reopening as a working men's club and for members to discuss the circumstances surrounding its closure.

Controversy surrounded the club as it continued to trade and take payment from members despite committee members knowing bailiffs were coming in the following day.

A number of long-serving members hailed it as one of the best club's in Yorkshire but blamed the committee for the closure, claiming it had been 'poorly run'.

Hi,Swifty the outcome of the meeting is that we have lost the club,The so called committee have lied through their back teeth regarding the debt owed to various parties, which is in the region of £250-000 which in affect means that no other brewery is likely to invest as we all suggested.I have been told that Samsmiths wants to arrange a meeting in order to disclose their imput in this matter, but as of yet no date to my knowledge as been set.I also want to add that the so called officials hang their heads in shame for the lies-deceit and deception in this matter, and stop walking about blaming the members for the down fall of OUR CLUB.The only way the members have any involvement is by reduced numbers entering the club which then caused loss of revenue, which then made it harder for them to cover up their wrong doings.

A meeting I have heard is to be held Tuesday 23rd at the club, membership cards as to be shown at the door.Committee are requested to attend. If you did not know they have not resigned due to the last meeting being unofficial. All I can say is that their arrogance beggers believe.
