Barnsley Gets Retail Boost

Monday March 25 2013

Arcade Arcade

BARNSLEY has received a retail boost with news of seven new businesses moving into the Arcade.

It means the shopping area will be almost 100 per cent occupied once they're all trading.

It was only a few months ago that several units had or were about to close down and fears were expressed that the Arcade was becoming a forgotten part of the town centre.

A fashion outlet, a takeaway, a gift store, a t-shirt printing shop, pop-up shops, and a new cafe/bar are to open.

But Andrew Corbett, managing director of Smith's Chartered Surveyors, confirmed the new businesses moving in and said: "This is the best news we have had for the Arcade for quite some time."

"The Arcade had been adversely affected by the failure of some of the businesses and by others moving out because of leases expiring and unfortunately that all came at the same time," he added.

Twister Sister and PicaLilys are two of the new business. I suppose it's better than having another Pound Shop.

The'gift shop' is actually a tattoo artist offering one of a kind, bespoke tattoos,a piercer and local designers polka dot who sell unique rockabilly and funky clothes and accessories.

What's wrong with Pound shops and Charity shops, it's all most people in Barnsley can afford these days. Unless your an MP, a Police Commisioner or a councillor that is !!

so true but dont knock charity shops debra in darton is brill

Nothing rainbow, but we have enough already. Im not an MP, police commisioner or a councillor but I do work.

Sadly Barnsley is a depressing place to shop these days imo.We need a variety of shops, not 5 or more of the same.

It's nice to see businesses moving into the Arcade though.

the saying use it or lose it springs to mind, dont desert barnsley for the meadowhall etc then moan when theres nothing left in barnsley.if people were a little more loyal to our town then investers might feel a little more confident in investing here.

Whatever happend to Odeon, Debenhams and H&M coming to Barnsley? They signed up to come here, but people moaned they didn't want them here because other businesses in the town would suffer, etc, etc. So investers do want to come. Costa Coffee springs to mind. It always looks busy.

Ask the council on that one!
We were getting a "Tuscan" village with a halo weren't we?
As for Costa, every other provincial town in the UK has had one for years!
What have we got? dozens of charity shops, more pound shops than you can shake a stick at and at least 3 greggs.
No where to buy CD'S or rent DVDS and one major sport shop chain, loads of scratters shops like primark and tkmaxx.....RUBBISH!

Meadowhall every time for me,no shouty alchos or smackrats wanting to borrow money either.

Tis good news for the arcade though I have to admit, the only shop I go in up there is originals.
Any one know when the tshirt printing shop opens?

I totally agree stevo. The council has promised us lots of things, but never delivered. We have a useless council which needs a shake up big time.

It's time for a change!

There's too many pubs, greasy takeaways and charity shops in Barnsley. I went in to town this afternoon and it was like a ghost town. BMBC's ridiculous town centre rates and parking chargers has run this town into the gutter.

I wish barnsley would change. Not only with the shops either.
I went into town last week and whilst stood waiting for a friend was sad to see lots of young men pacing up and down, seeking their first fix of the day after their first shop lift of the day. Dirty, thin, rotten teeth, and dirty clothes. Why would I want to come into town for my children to be part of this? It's not just the shops we need to change but the people who use our town for the sale of their own methadone and to use our shops to steal from.

THESE are the people that the town centre dispersal orders should be aimed at,them and the shouty alchos!

You could always visit the Town Hall fountains and Museum. I bet the people of Barnsley can't wait. *Sarcasm*

I left Barnsley to work away in 2004 and pined every day to come back. Finally moved back two years ago and i wept at the state Barnsley had become. I feel intimidated in the town centre on my own with all the scrubber youths pestering people for money and gangs of idiots drinking and being idiots. No longer go on nights out either due to the standard of the bars, the stench of the places and having to constantly step over people laying in their own vomit in the street.....what the hell has happened to our town????

Reply Posted by Neil on Saturday March 30 2013 at 16:30
Yep, it's upsetting Leanne. The blame lays with Barnsley Council, pure and simple.

i went into town on thursday and went into next there were 3 people in there,i went into primark and as usuall it was busy.i really believe with the state of peoples finances at the moment higher end shops would not survive, from what ive observed lately people just dont have the money to be able to afford the higher prices these stores charge

I remember spending my weekends shopping and partying without a care in the world in Barnsley. I think i had the best years and its a nice memory...but thats all it will ever be now. A memory

Reply Posted by Hoyland Red on Sunday March 31 2013 at 20:09
Your memory can play tricks on you Leanne. I used to go out when the White Hart, Silvers, Shambles were going, through to The Pavillion, Brownes KGV and then onto the time when Hedonism, Sports Bar etc were all the rage. Thought it was brilliant but i'm sure there were drunks vomiting in the streets, discarded fast food everywhere, fights breaking out etc. I remember older relatives telling me how the town centre had changed for the worst. It's all about the time you were there.

Reply Posted by Dawn on Sunday March 31 2013 at 21:08
This is one of the problems. Too many pubs for such a small town.

Reply Posted by Neil on Monday April 1 2013 at 11:49
It's definatly time for a change at the Town Hall. This Council has done nothing for the town whatsoever. Let's hope the people of Barnsley realise this for the sake of our town.
