A WINTER beer festival in January raised more than £2,000 - despite heavy snowfall.

The event, organised by the Denby Dale Lions, was held at St John's Church in Penistone.

More than 300 real ale enthusiasts turned out to enjoy the 20 local beers on offer and raise funds to be split between the church and Hollybank Trust charity.

Hollybank provides education, care and support for children, young people and adults with profound physical disabilities, associated learning difficulties and complex medical needs.

Steve Godfrey, president of Denby Dale Lions, said: "This was our first beer festival held in Penistone and proved to be a tremendous success."

Beer barrels were sponsored by local businesses, and all ales came from within a ten mile radius - except one brew from Ashover in Derbyshire.

Suzanne Barton, from Hollybank, said the charity's share of the money has gone towards kitting out new children's accommodation.

"We're very grateful to the Lions for organising this for us and hope to work with them all again very soon," she said. "Despite the snow, we had a fantastic time."
