Another Barnsley Centenarian!

Monday March 11 2013

We Are Barnsley We Are Barnsley

ANOTHER Barnsley resident celebrated her 100th birthday.

Nellie Hollingsworth, from Shafton, received a visit from the Mayor of Barnsley, Cllr Dorothy Higginbottom, to celebrate the milestone.

Her son Derek, 73, said: "Holly Tree Lodge organised a party for her with her friends and family. We had a bit of a bun fight - it was a lovely day."

Born in Hoyland, Nellie - who has one son, three grandchildren and one great-granddaughter - married Harold, a colliery storekeeper, in 1933.

The pair were married for 44 years before Harold died in 1977.

Nellie, who lived in Birdwell for much of her married life, moved to Shafton last year.

Derek added: "She has settled in well at Holly Tree Lodge. I'm told by staff at the home that she eats two helpings of porridge every morning."

Nellie is the third centenarian we've heard about this year. We love hearing about these! Here are the other two:

Happy birthday from We Are Barnsley!
