MP Wants To Halt 'Mummy Tax'

MP Michael Dugher has called for a halt to tax new mums in Barnsley.

From April this year, the government will restrict Statutory Maternity Pay to a 1 per cent annual increase.

Michael Dugher has revealed that by 2015, this cut in maternity pay will effectively be a £180 ‘Mummy Tax’ on an estimated 1200 working women in his Barnsley East constituency.

This comes on top of a series of further cuts, including child benefit reductions.

Mr Dugher has verified, using figures compiled by the House of Commons Library, that low paid new mums in Barnsley will lose £1,300 during pregnancy and the baby's first year from cuts to pregnancy support, tax credits and real terms cuts to maternity pay.

The MP said: “Families in Barnsley shouldn’t have to pay the price of the government’s failed economic policies - and especially not working mums in Barnsley, who already face tough financial pressures when they have a new baby.”

So - they say they want to encourage parent's to go back to work, then they decide to try to cut Children's Centres so parent's will have nowhere to put their kids into nursery once they go back to work. And now they want to cut maternity pay therefore forcing more women to return to work earlier than they should because they now can't afford to stay at home and look after their kids, but they've got rid of the nurseries? I have no idea what this government is doing. When the next generation all turn out to be delinquents because they had no input from their parents because they were too busy being forced to go back to work by the government I wonder who they will blame.

i think it is clear that this government are defiantly trying to force a return to force"tradional family values" where little women stay at home cooking and cleaning and popping out the future slave erm i mean work force. they are trying to make in near on impossible to be a single parent working or otherwise, educational opportunities are going to be out of most peoples reach, there's going to be little or no support for working parent and even less if you choose to stay at home to bring up your children, this country is going to need classifying as a third world country by the time this lot has done. but hey at least if we go back to hunting and gathering we will know what's in our food.
