Residents Call For Asda To Put A Stop To The Dumping Of Its Trolleys In Nearby River

Monday March 4 2013

RESIDENTS around Asda on Old Mill Lane have urged the supermarket giant to take immediate action to stop the dumping of trolleys in the nearby Dearne.

They're saying that the trolleys are not only an eyesore, but also a potential environmental hazard.

Fred Ward, who lives near the store, said: "I'm sick to death of calling the supermarket, the council, the environment agency and anyone else who will listen about the problem."

"They look bad and they could be dangerous. At the very least it's a waste of money."

Staff at the store off Old Mill Lane admit they're aware and also frustrated by the problem.

"We share concerns about abandoned trolleys. Clearly, most of our customers can be trusted to use trolleys appropriately,'' said an Asda spokesman. ''We plead once again with the minority of people that do take them off site and abandon them to stop doing so, and ask anyone else that sees one abandoned to give us a call so that we can go and collect it."

They also said that they're looking at ways to stop this happening in the future.

I know that Tesco at Wombwell have a system where the trolleys are fitted with a device which locks the wheels if moved off the supermarket site. Surely Asda could use this system too?

I made a similar complaint in writing to the store on Old Mill Lane two year ago because certain customers were and still are loading their cars and just leaving the trolleys to be blown by the wind into other customers cars on stormy days. I suggested that they followed the lead of their competitors and made all their trolleys usable with the use of a £1 coin or token. This would ensure that they took them back so they didn't loose their money. My complaint was ignored.
