Council Announce Record Grit Levels

Wednesday December 5 2012

snow shovel snow shovel

BARNSLEY Council is preparing for a frosty winter and has brought in record levels of rock salt.

It has more than 11,700 tonnes of grit ready to be used - although less than half of all local roads are gritted as a precaution.

It added: "Once all the primary routes have been gritted and are running freely we will then consider streets included in the secondary routes list.

"We currently precautionary grit 48 per cent of Barnsley’s roads, but unfortunately do not have resources to grit them all."

The council also works to a 'snow plan' which covers local shopping areas, outside doctors surgeries and schools, OAP sheltered housing complexes and OAP bungalow estates.

It covers over 400 sites and comes into affect after every fresh snowfall - once these have been dealt with the staff move onto other locations and specific requests.

To request a road be gritted, or arrange for a grit bin to be filled, go here.

Court House Carpark, Barnsley town centre.
This car park was very slippy this morning (5th dec). A few falls and slips from myself as well as an old couple walking with me.
Think that it needs to be gritted and monitored as a lot of customers/people venturing into our town will use this car park and if they slip and fall then we will loose these customers as they will fear coming into town and using that car park

they should grit every road and foot paths,,,,the gritter drivers drive that they use drive to fast, it doesnt cover the roads right ,,,just trying to save on grit all the time,,,,,ya dont see that many grit bins now ,the ones that are out there soon as they get filled people just fill bags up then nothing left ,you cant win ,feel sorry for ambulances police fire men, when they carnt get up streets what havent been done ,,,,would be hell on if it happened to the people that makes the rules up ,there house on fire etc and none of them could get to them if they was in trouble, bet things would change then,,,but maybe not,,, rant over lol

So can I ask why all the grit bins are empty if these were filled then side streets can be done by the residents but when I needed to set out this morning at 6.30 our grit bin was empty, and the one at the business I work at, so maybe some focus on getting these filled should be considered, that way workers can get to work on time, I think we all appreciate that side streets are an after thought but if we can't get from our houses to the main roads we can't get to work so PLEASE FILL THE GRIT BINS PROVIDED ON SIDE STREETS

Reply Posted by bevsem on Friday December 14 2012 at 18:30
Well sad Kaz. To actually provide grit bins in the first place to be filled would be nice - why there aren't more in every area is beyond me! Don't the council know even one days worth of ice or snow stops everything in this country.

i ask for a grit bin 3yrs ago and still waiting for one, it's not that but me street has a hill on it and it run's straight in to doncaster road so when there is ice or snow big problems stopping at the end

Think BMBC need to seriously reconsider and restructure their procedures for this type of weather, yet again it is obvious this council is run by a bunch of dithering over paid idiots!

im not been fnny but there as been loads a accident around our area n non of our grit bins have been filled it like an ice ring outside n there is elderly on my street i think it so wrong if u fill the bin we can do the rest x

Reply Posted by Trevor on Friday December 14 2012 at 11:43
We have record level's of salt . We don't have the resources to do all the road's ? Great

gritted Bala Street corsi in town...but can u do it earlier nxt time preferably before skool run...it wa like an ice rink tryin t walk down this mornin. I had to walk on road which is dangerous with 2 kids. My daughter set off to high school this mornin at 7.15am I really dread wat it was like at that time!!

Reply Posted by Jules on Friday December 14 2012 at 12:14
the only issue with the grit bins is that people who are too TIGHT to go and buy their own grit, nick it out of the bins. I have seen on more than one occasion people filling up bags of the stuff from the bins, and putting them in to cars....how does that help the local residents who actually need it!

Reply Posted by dean on Friday December 14 2012 at 12:17
Try telling bosses that when you can not get of your street or you try and hurt some one driving your car or hurt your self getting to a bus stop walking its not on

Reply Posted by observer on Friday December 14 2012 at 13:28
i agree with a previous complainant. the gritter waggons drive far to quickly. on another note, i would suggest that motorwys are gritted before anywhere else. thats via the whole of the country, not just barnsley. this is because we must not let "businesses " to fail in delivery. for the man \ woman on the street, we have to put up with it. and risk life and limb. this is a poor attitude and needs to be addressed.

Surely the priorities of the council are schewed when it comes to gritting?
What is the point of doing the main routes if local people cannot get their vehicles off of the estates they park on and live at? Why do the outside of shops when the shop holders could do outside each shop themselves? Why do the elderly estates when the elderly should be encouraged to stay in and keep warm with food being delivered to them ? We have had ice for 4 days and no gritters to be seen. They are holding it back in case of snow!

what a joke barnsley council and the highways dept ARE ,so your statement says you don't have resources !!!!!!! my arse!! i dont think i will have resources to pay my £93.00 council tax!!! from now on then oh but then i will get took to court wont i ! ,not forgetting all the recycling people do so that the council can get paid for!!! ,so you say you grit the main roads ?but how are we going to get onto those roads when no one can get onto them because they are iced in???,i could NOT get off the street where i live this morning till 11 am when the black ice had thawed NOT been gritted (pogmoor) and im trying to keep a business running,
100% not fit for purpose ,the only grit i see in pogmoor is when i grit my teeth because of the total incompetence of this council ,crap!!

Does anyone know if there's a list of where grit bins are located in Barnsley?

Reply Posted by jill on Friday December 14 2012 at 16:27
On the list of priorities is OAP and disabled bungalows , well how come mine has never been done

Reply Posted by beth on Friday December 14 2012 at 18:32
It's alright gritting outside the doctors (park grove) but the whole of park road needs doing! And the streets coming off it. No one could come up or down that road this morning so God knows how they'd even get up the doctors.

Carr lane at tankersley never gets gritted its a thru road for howbrook and A61 to sheffield. kids struggle to get to bus for school and ppl cant get out for work or shops. absolute joke just gets worse.

I respect the council for what they do with regards to keeping the roads open , a main road needs to be done first but then into estates , if every household on a estate was given a bag of grit HOW MANY would actually use it when its needed most , IF this was done and each person spreads a shovel full of grit the estates wouldnt be a problem .

highstone cres up worsbough common needs gritting cos theres cars parked both sides big hill to get up on the corner to turn too highstone vale needs doing most because theres too many cars sliping side too side then whos too blame when you hit another car cos all your doing is gritting streets that dont need it like highstone av plenty of cars go on there so it can just go too side on road where theres hardly any cars. and the grit bin needs moveing too the very top of worsbough common.
