Hospice Supports Awareness Week

Tuesday October 9 2012

BARNSLEY Hospice is running a campaign this week to show locals the work it does other than provide inpatient care.

It is supporting Hopice Care Week and aims to show that - although it has an inpatient unit with ten beds - it also has day care services, complimentary therapies, social work, counselling and support groups.

Spokesman Diana Gibson said: “People often don’t realise all the wide range of services we offer to such a wide range of people across Barnsley.

“Hospice care does not just take place in a building; we’re out in the community and at Barnsley Hospital too. And it’s not just for people with cancer; we support anyone in Barnsley with a life-limiting condition and it is all free to the patient and their families.”

Barnsley Hospice has to find £1.9m on top of its NHS grant of £1.6m every year and relies heavily on volunteers, general donations and sales at its nine charity shops.

Staff at the shops will be promoting Hospice Care Week by asking customers to write down what hospice care means to them in one word, with the words placed on special display boards until October 14.
