Overseas Buyers Vie For Football Club Purchase

Monday September 24 2012

TWO foreign buyers are at the centre of a takeover battle for Barnsley Football Club - with investors promising to spend £10 million on the squad.

An Italian consortium and a group of Qatari businessmen have made enquiries about buying the club.

The Italian group attended the Reds’ 125-year anniversary game against Blackpool earlier this month.

Talks have been ongoing for the last month and reports claim the investors would be willing to pump up to £10 million into the squad.

Club director Don Rowing said: “We have been approached but there are no offers at this stage.

"There are a number of interested parties because the club has been stabilised over the years and is now debt free and is therefore attractive to certain investors.“

i would be very careful with this one mr rowins and the rest of bfc.eveyrone sees a take over bid as fantastic opportunity to progress. which is good. but please do not allow a clause for them to sell it. or the training ground etc. etc. it is the bst training facilities in the country, and is also on the doorstep. 10 million is a good amount to put into a squad. does anyone know how much it will actually be paid for the whole of the club.

As Observer has put, I too think that there must me ground rules placed on the buying of the club. Main one is not to let new finacial owners put pressure on directors to remove a great management team to be replaced by there own picking. Keith and his team have had very little in the way of finance over the last 12 months and what he has done it brilliant, just shows you DO NOT need millions to make a good team. It's all down to the management that we have a good side and are looking to do well this season. Keith Hill has not finished building and like any thing he needs another 12 months so the team can grow together and bear the fruit's from the hard work from all the team and good management.

be careful Barnsley, look at whats happened to Portsmouth and other clubs who thought foreign money would solve all their problems. We nearly folded before, cant we just be happy with being a solid, local community football club?
