Barnsley Gets Raw Deal In Lottery Funding According To MP

BARNSLEY has missed out on millions of pounds of lottery funding, according to an MP.

John Healey, for Dearne, says the town is getting a raw deal when it is compared with the national picture.

He says Rotherham, Barnsley and Doncaster have lost out on more than £83m since lottery funding began in 1995, bringing in only a quarter of the national average in grants.

Of the 1,090 grants totalling £75 million which have gone to good causes in Barnsley, £23 million was for heritage projects.

He said: “This is a time when we need support more than ever.

“Our area is bearing the brunt of government spending cuts and that is putting local facilities and services under threat and limiting the good work charities and community groups can do.

“It is unacceptable that, per person, there is less lottery funding going to industrial towns like Barnsley.”

A spokesman for The National Lottery Good Causes said: “28 per cent of Lottery funding awarded in England has gone to the 10 per cent most deprived local authority areas.

“The way National Lottery funding is recorded means it is impossible to make accurate geographical comparisons.

''For example, large grants to South Yorkshire County Sport Partnership are recorded to Sheffield, even though the whole region benefits.”
