Speak Up against domestic violence

Thursday February 14 2019

RED roses have been scattered around Barnsley today to raise awareness about speaking up against domestic abuse.

250 roses have been scattered throughout the borough each tagged with a Valentine’s Day message to the reader, displaying a thought-provoking verse in regards to the type of abuse that can take place within a relationship.

Speak Up is a campaign run by Barnsley Council in partnership with IDAS (Independent Domestic Abuse Service) to highlight the support and services available to people who have concerns within their relationships.

Sam Goulding IDAS Regional Manager said: "We really would like to try and highlight the dynamics of domestic abuse being so much more than physical violence. The impact that our clients tell us about last so much longer than injuries and bruises healing, the emotional recovery at times can be the hardest part of the journey."

Coun Jenny Platts said: “It’s crucial that people Speak Up and don’t suffer in silence. There’s local support available with specially trained staff ready to listen to any concerns you have within your relationship and advice on how to take steps to get out of an unhealthy relationship.

"On Valentine's day if you see one of the IDAS roses make sure you share this message.”

IDAS are available to speak to on 03000 110 110.
