MEMBERS of the council and The Royal British Legion came together to begin a week of celebrations for National Armed Forces Day, which will take place tomorrow.

To start the week the mayor, Coun Pauline Markham, led a small ceremony outside the Town Hall where members of the council, local MPs and representatives of The Royal British Legion raised the flag outside the Town Hall.

This event has taken place every year to begin official proceedings and week of remembrance.

Barnsley East MP Stephanie Peacock said: “This event marks the start of National Armed Forces Week which is a whole week of celebration to remember the fallen and those still in service.

There will be lots of events taking place across Barnsley throughout the week which will culminate with Penistone Armed Forces Day tomorrow.”

Cudworth councillor Joe Hayward, said: It’s something that goes back to before I became a councillor. We have always done this at the start of Armed Forces Week to remember both the people that are still here, and those that gave their lives. We raise the flag on June 24 to remember their sacrifice.”
