MAPPLEWELL’S police station could be turned into a funeral directors under new plans submitted to Barnsley Council.

Applicant Stephen Torres, who runs White Rose Funeral Service, wants to convert the Blacker Road building, which closed in 2016.

Although locals have appealed to South Yorkshire Police to reopen the station – as seen in nearby Cudworth which now houses the local policing team – calls have so far failed to be answered and the council has identified an expected decision date of May 17.

A planning statement said: “Changing the use of this property would be an enormous privilege for the community of Mapplewell and beyond.

“Funeral directors tend to be a very stable business in an area and in particular within a village community we can be seen as a bedrock due to the sensitive services that we provide.”
