DEMOLITION of the former CEAG building in Barnsley has begun this month - but the council say it does not herald the start of the market's project.

The building, on Kendray Street, is expected to be fully flattened by the end of September - during which time the nearby railway tracks will be closed for three nights.

A council spokesman said: "Although the site is part of the Marketplace Barnsley scheme, the demolition work does not signify the start of the larger development. Undertaking the demolition at this early stage will, however, provide a cleared site for the development."

The large decorative lamps on the top of the building - which are around five times larger than a real colliery lamp - will be saved for display at the Experience Barnsley museum in the Town Hall.
