AN INTERNATIONALLY renowned diabetes expert who works at Barnsley Hospital helped to raise awareness of the complications of the illness during Diabetes Prevention Week 2019.
Professor Thomas Hugh Jones is a consultant at Barnsley Hospital.
Diabetes Prevention Week took place this week and saw Diabetes UK team up with NHS England to raise awareness of the Healthier You programme which is a free service to reduce people’s risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
The service offers a free NHS health check and the opportunity to find out your risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.
Professor Jones said: “High blood sugar levels from diabetes can seriously damage parts of your body including your heart, brain, kidneys, feet and eyes. There are all sorts of complications but you can prevent these by keeping blood sugar, blood pressure and blood facts under control.
“For those who have already been diagnosed, this means going for your diabetes health checks and knowing how to look after yourself between appointments.”
