A CONTROVERSIAL plan to create a new gyratory system on one of Barnsley's main roads has been approved.

A proposal was drawn up last year in a bid to try and relieve congestion on the A628 Dodworth Road and Pogmoor heading towards the M1 and into the town centre.

Prior to the application being apporoved by the council, a request was made to the Secretary of State for or Housing, Communities and Local Government James Brokenshire, to ask him to ‘call in’ the application meaning he would become the decision maker.

He confirmed that he will not be “calling-in” the planning application and the planning application was formally approved yesterday.

Leader of Barnsley Council, Sir Steve Houghton CBE said: “Further details on the process between now and the scheme starting on site, including suggested timescales, will be issued in due course.

"In the meantime we would like to thank everybody for their patience and can confirm that the council will seek to work with the community on the detailed design of the re-designed park.”
