A CENTRE that provides social care to local residents could be axed under plans announced by Barnsley Council yesterday.
It is anticipated that the closure would affect 34 council staff and 38 NHS staff, who would be put 'at risk' of redundancy.
We Are Barnsley understands that the centre is joint funded by Barnsley Council and Barnsley Primary Care Trust - but it seems the PCT may not have the money available to continue funding their share, and the council can't afford to run it on its own.
Coun Jenny Platts said: "We've made it clear over a number of months now that, because of reductions in the councils grant from central government, the money we need to maintain all services at the levels we would like is no longer available.
"This means we have to consider other options, and in some other unfortunate circumstances, the options on the table are ones we don't like. However, these are tough times and we will have to make some tough, sometimes unpopular decisions."
It is recommended that Highfield Grange close at the end of March 2012, which will free up about £700,000 of funding to be used elsewhere.
