FOUR big names are set to join The Glass Works Development, with two stores set to open next year.

JD SPORTS, restaurant/café/bar Lounges, Muffin Break and local independent restaurant MEET have all committed to The Glass Works development – with JD and Lounges set to open next year.

The four brands have signed up to the £180m redevelopment of the town centre. JD and Lounges are set to open their doors in 2019, with Muffin Break and MEET following at a later date. The businesses will join the already announced Cineworld cinema, Superbowl UK and fashion giant Next in the development.

JD Sports will be complete with a state of the art fit out and will offer shoppers exclusive styles from the best brands.

Independent restaurant MEET will be the latest venture by Barnsley restaurateur Dan Sharp – who already runs two town centre businesses in the popular 00Bar and Backyard BBQ, both on The Victorian Arcade.

Coun Sir Steve Houghton CBE, Leader of Barnsley Council, said: “We are absolutely delighted to announce a further four retail and leisure brands for our flagship Glass Works scheme.

“This is a statement of intent and sends a strong, clear message of what we want The Glass Works to be.

“Not only have we signed up the country’s biggest sports fashion retailer in JD Sports, but also an existing independent Barnsley business will be opening a new restaurant called MEET, illustrating our strong support of local businesses.

“The redevelopment of the town centre is really progressing and we’re already starting to see positive results. The new market is open and roaring with trade, while footfall is up 11 per cent on this time last year, bucking the national trend. We’re committed to delivering the redevelopment of the town centre and that is evident with what we’ve achieved so far.”
