A NEW Neonatal unit will officially open this week at Barnsley Hospital.

The new unit will open this Thursday and will provide care for babies born at 27 weeks and above.

It will include 14 cots in total: two intensive care, three high dependency and nine special care.

Work started on the £2.8 million unit earlier this year following donations to the hospital charity’s Tiny Hearts Appeal which was launched in 2014 to raise £1million.

Hundreds of local fundraisers and supporters have taken the cause to their hearts and held many sponsored activities from wing walks to bike rides to raise money.

Dickie Bird, who has donated thousands to the neonatal project will be at the opening on Thursday.

Lead Neonatal Nurse Angela Whelton said: "This new unit is bringing our environment into the 21st century. The hospital has invested a large amount of money to make this happen but none of it would be possible without the generosity of the people of Barnsley."
