TWO boys who caused damage to a public monument in Monk Bretton are now facing the consequences of their actions.

Sometime between Tuesday July 24 to Thursday August 2, glass panes on a monument commemorating the local Monk Bretton Glass Industry were smashed, causing thousands of pounds in damage to the structure.

The incident was reported by a local councillor and an officer form the Cudworth Neighbourhood Team, PC Sam Whitehead, began investigating. With the help of the community, two 12-year-old boys were identified on CCTV and could be seen throwing stones at the glass panes.

They were interviewed by officers and both admitted causing the damage.

They will now be referred to the Barnsley Youth Offending Team to be dealt with.

PC Sam Whitehead said: “This monument means a lot to the local community and I’m pleased that the two boys admitted the damage they had caused and apologised for their actions.”
