IT MAY become harder for takeaways to open in Barnsley town centre as new planning rules could restrict them from opening.

A new proposal to cover developments in the borough could see rules change in how takeaways are given planning permission

Restrictions were introduced in 2012, but they are limited to ensure only that full rows of shops are not taken over by outlets operating side by side.

Details of the proposal came to light after councillors rejected a planning application for a cafe in High Street, Hoyland to start trading as a takaway.
