SEVERAL volunteers participated in a clean-up event in the town centre last Wednesday.

The clean-up was arranged by the Safer Neighbourhood Service, and 24 volunteers spent several hours sprucing up George Yard and Hanson Street, including giving the area a fresh lick of paint.

In total, six black bags were filled with litter with recyclable materials bagged separately.

In addition, 17 fixed penalty notices were issued by Kingdom officers for littering offences in the town centre, while 34 bin stickers were replaced to remind the public of the penalty they face for failing to dispose of their rubbish responsibly.

Coun Jenny Platts said: "A big thank you to everyone who donated their time as part of our latest clean-up event - the area looks much better for their hard work.

"I would encourage people to take responsibility for their litter and keep our borough looking beautiful."
