A NEW scheme is being introduced in New Lodge and Athersley to combat loneliness and social isolation.

DIAL, a local charity which supports disabled people and their families are launching hOurbank, a community timebank where local people can come together to help others and themselves - one hour at a time.

Following the success of hOurbank in the Dearne, the North Area Council have funded the scheme for the next year in the hope it establishes in Barnsley.

Gill Richmond, 51, project manager said: "The scheme is successful because it brings together the community and people have the opportunity to learn new skills and socialise.

"In return we are combating loneliness and sharing skills that doesn't cost a penny. It has a positive impact on your mental health"

The scheme will be officially launched on Friday July 20 at St Helen's Church, Laithes Lane in Athersley from 10am to 12pm.

hOurbank is open to everyone and you do not have to have a disability to be considered. If you would like to get involved you can contact Gill on 07788 537900
