THOUSANDS of residents will go to the polls today as local elections take place.

Local elections and the elected candidate deal with the day-to-day runnings of the area, such as bin collections, roads and local parks.

Councillors up for election can be from either established political parties, or they can be independent candidates.

By voting in a local election, you're voting for an individual person based on what they pledge for your area.

It does not have much bearing on national policy.

Residents will also vote in a Mayoral election, to lead the Sheffield City Region Combined Authority.
