GETTING caught littering can result in an on-the-spot fine of £150 as new penaties come into effect today.
Barnsley council, alongside councils across Britian, have been given the power to raise fines from the previous maximum penalty of £80.
The fine has also been set to include those caught throwing rubbish out their vehicle.
The government claims collecting litter costs councils £680m a year.
Barnsley Council have welcomed the changes, and have reminded residents of the #EverybodyThink campaign, encouraging recycling and throwing away rubbish.
