BARNSLEY goes to the polls in May for the local elections - and Barnsley Council has urged residents to make sure they're registered to vote.

The local government elections - which will take place on May 3 - select councillors, who are responsible for making decisions on running services in the local area.

These include housing, education, transport, planning, parks, leisure, fire and public safety, social care and waste management.

The council is urging residents who have not registered at their current address to make sure they are registered in time to vote.

The deadline to register to vote is midnight on Tuesday April 17.

People who were eligible to vote in last year’s general election and whose details have not changed will still be registered to vote. Residents can check their details by calling the elections helpline on (01226) 773070.
