THE first section of the £130m Glass Works development will open its doors in September when Barnsley Market moves into its new home.
The Meat and Fish Market will be the first to move into the newly refurbished Metropolitan Centre in early September.
The Meat and Fish Market is expected to broaden its offer, with existing traders being joined by a variety of new arrivals.
Meanwhile, the opening of the newly-refurbished Market Hall and Market Kitchen will follow in early November.
The new Market Hall will house over a hundred new purpose-built stalls, all individually-designed to each trader’s requirements.
The building features two new escalators and two lifts to the first floor, along with easily-accessible ramps between the Market Hall and the Food Hall.
The council says wide aisles and glass atriums will create a bright and airy feel, and there will be washroom facilities on both levels with baby changing and toilets for shoppers, all easily accessible.
Market Kitchen will be on the first floor of the new Market Hall with the current market cafés becoming the cornerstone.
Market Kitchen will be easily accessible by escalator from the Market Hall and by lift or stairs from street level.
