LOCALS with long-term health conditions are being urged to have a free flu vaccination.

Latest statistics show that three out of five Barnsley residents with diabetes have taken up the offer and received the flu jab either from their GP surgery or by a pharmacist.

Now other people with underlying health conditions - even one that is well managed - are also being urged to take up the offer of flu vaccination, as they are at greater risk of severe complications if they catch flu.

Coun Jim Andrews, Cabinet Spokesperson for Public Health, said: “Flu, on top of a long-term health condition such as COPD; bronchitis, emphysema; diabetes; heart kidney or liver disease or after having have suffered a stroke, can easily develop into something very serious, such as pneumonia, and could land you in hospital.

"Don’t put off getting the flu vaccination. It’s free because you need it.”
