A MAN found collapsed in the town centre after police believe he consumed drugs is in a critical condition in hospital.
Emergency services were called to Mottram Street just before 7.35pm last night following reports that two men were collapsed in the street, believed to be from the potential consumption of drugs.
One of the men, aged 55, was taken to hospital, where he currently remains in a critical condition.
The second man, aged 47, has been arrested on suspicion of drug related offences and currently remains in police custody.
Barnsley Superintendent Sarah Poolman, said: “I’m aware that this incident has caused some concern within the local community, however I’d like to reassure residents that we are not treating this as an assault at this time.
"I’d like to thank local residents for their patience while officers attended to the two men and examined the scene.”
