THE FLOUCH INN pub will be demolished to make way for five houses, We Are Barnsley can reveal.

Mr D Yeardley was given permission to develop the site which is at the junction of Whams Road with Old Manchester Road.

The site would be accessed by a new private drive off Old Manchester Road, with a four bedroomed farmhouse being at the centre of the design. The other homes will be designed to look like barns/outbuildings and farm workers cottage. Three letters of objection were submitted against the scheme, objecting to the loss of the 'landmark' pub building

But the planning report said: "This very special circumstance included the fact that there was little demand for the building, due to its location and size, to be used as a public house, or for any other commercial or business purpose and this was evidenced by a marketing exercise and through the submission of financial accounts.

"Also, as the condition of the building and the appearance of the site was deteriorating due to the fact it was not been fully utilized and the replacement scheme was of a high quality, it was considered that the redevelopment of the site could be supported."

Councillors on the planning board approved the scheme.
