WORK to build the new library in the town centre has begun.

The Mayor of Barnsley, Coun Linda Burgess made the first dig into the ground this morning (April 25) formally starting construction on the first permanent building within The Glass Works, Barnsley’s town centre development scheme.

The £5.3million central library and community space has been designed to be the beacon of the town, as it will have a transparent glazed skin that emits light to illuminate the new public square.

It will offer free Wi-Fi throughout the building, almost double the space for IT facilities, a roof terrace amd opportunities for events and functions.

Locals will be encouraged to help decide the name of the new building as construction progresses.

Alongside the library, The Glass Works will provide shops, restaurants, a 13 screen Cineworld and Superbowl UK, alongside a brand new home for Barnsley Markets, multi-storey car park and public realm.
