POLICE have issued a warning to drug users after four people died in Barnsley of suspected heroin overdoses.
Officers say they are investigating the four currently unexplained deaths that were reported at different addresses.
This morning (April 14) 33-year-old man and a 40-year-old man were found dead at two separate addresses in Barnsley, while a 47-year-old woman was found dead at a house in Grimethorpe.
And this evening, a 31-year-old man was found dead at also at an address in Barnsley.
Officers say an early line of enquiry is to establish if the deaths are linked to heroin use, although they are waiting for results of post mortem examinations and toxicology tests.
Police also say they are not formally linking the incidents at present - and a coroner’s investigation is underway to establish the cause of each death.
Temporary Chief Inspector Ian Proffitt said: “We are very concerned. For four deaths to occur in similar circumstances in a small time period and in a relatively small geographical area is unusual.
“Sadly, we are currently investigating the circumstances of the four deaths and are considering if they are linked to the strength or content of heroin being used locally.
“The public should exercise caution if they come into contact with controlled drugs, particularly heroin, or heroin derivatives.
"If you experience any unusual symptoms after taking drugs, seek medical attention immediately."
A 37-year old man and a 42-year-old man have been arrested on suspicion of being concerned in the supply of controlled drugs and released under investigation.
Anyone with information about the deaths or the illegal supply of drugs can contact South Yorkshire Police on 101, quoting incident number 164 of 14 April or call crime-stoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
Anyone concerned about their heroin use should seek advice from a medical professional or get help with their addiction via the NHS.
