DRIVERS who have held a license for less than two years are likely to be banned if they are caught using a mobile phone under new laws that come in this week - that will also see existing punishments double.

The penalty for motorists caught using a mobile phone will double from a £100 fine and three points to £200 and six points on Wednesday, March 1.

Drivers could even face prosecution if police do not think the fine is enough of a penalty, especially if it involves crash.

Motorists will also no longer be offered the opportunity to go on a driver awareness course once the new legislation comes into force.
